Forced oscillation technique can be used to remotely monitor deterioration of respiratory function of elderly patients with COPD and cardiac comorbidities.
On the study population, telemedicine didn’t produce significant improvement either in the reduction of the hospitalization rate or quality of life.
However, when applied to severe COPD patients with recurrent exacerbations, remote monitoring of respiratory function produced:
- a statistically significant reduction in hospitalization rate (p=0.038)
- a noticeable reduction of healthcare cost related to the disease (1734€/patient over 9 months)
